Does being in DMOZ help search engine optimisation?

Yes. This is the accepted view, and this is our experience. At the end of 2006 this was still our experience, but getting listed in DMOZ may now be impossible as DMOZ is no longer able to accept new entries.

Is getting a listing in DMOZ a part of your SEO process?

It was. And having more than one DMOZ editor within the company meant that we could ensure submissions were done correctly and stood a 'higher than average' chance of being accepted. A knowledge of which categories were processsing submissions within 1-6 months, rather than 3-6 years was rather more helpful.

Unfortunately, due to technical (and other?) problems with DMOZ, the directory can no longer accept new submissions. It also appears that much extsing data has been lost, so the future of the old DMOZ is uncertain.
