Website Accessibility

All websites designed by Cornish WebServices are designed with accessibility in mind as standard, together with other industry standards. Why?

  • Because it is the law
  • Because we understand the huge business benefits of an accessible website.

Cornish WebServices provide a range of services to help organisations update their existing websites to meet current accessibility standards. These include:

  • accessibility consultancy
  • accessibility testing
  • modifying existing websites to meet current disability legislation
  • re-designing an existing website to become accessible

Accessibility Website Testing Service

Cornish WebServices offer a range of accessibility testing, suited to websites of varying size and complexity. For small organisations such as local government, charities and schools or other webdesign companies we offer a basic accessibility testing service enabling just the main website pages to be checked at an affordable cost. We hope that by bringing down the costs of accessibility testing more organisations will create websites that can be read by screen readers. This work is automatically carried out on all website we design as standard.

We also offer a full accessibility audit more suited to larger organisations (and budgets).

The majority of this work is carried out using the JAWS (Job Access With Speech) software, and does not rely on automated accessibility checking software.

Our website contains several pages of information on accessible website design and colour blind issues to consider when designing a website.

Why should websites be accessible?

Firstly it is the law - all websites should comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). From 1st October 1999, the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 requires that organisations with a website do not discriminate against certain users. This is an obligation on both the client and the website designer.

Secondly the most important website user (Google) is blind. It makes business sense to create accessible websites. We estimate it cost an extra 5% at the design phase to create an accessible website, and saves many times the website cost in reduced marketing costs. For a business website the marketing saving is likely to be much greater.
