SEO and copy writing

What has copy writing got to do with SEO ?

Surprisingly we still get asked this!

We are presented with a completed website for which the design and copy has been 'finalised and signed off' and asked to do some 'search engine optimisation'. If your website is well written (this might be an assumption) then your page content is one of the most important factors in search engine optimisation.

So I include my main keyword hundreds of times?

Sadly, in 2003 this was very effective. The top search places were full of websites stuffed full of keywords and hidden text. Thankfully this is no longer the case, and most decent search engines can exclude such websites. It is NOT a good idea to stuff your page full of keywords.

Do I need to write differently for the web than for 'real' visitors?

There are a few differences, and our copywriters do use slightly different techniques and approaches for pages that are more likely to be heavily visited by search engine robots. However, when optimising a website the long term goal should not be lost. To be 'ranked number one' may be very helpful, but if the website is so awful that all visitors 'bounce' (i.e. leave immediately) this will bring little or no business benefit.

So copy writing is also about writing to convert casual website visitors into sales leads (or whatever is appropriate for your market). Within Cornish WebServices we use professional copywriters who write for various media (e.g. films) as well as website copy.
