What are 'dark side attacks' ?

"Dark side attack" is the new name for a technique that has been used unintentionally for a long time within some of the poorer shopping carts. However the new name suggests that some bad SEO companies or individuals are using this to attack competitors websites. It involves sessions, so anyone with a knowledge of server-side scripting languages can guess how it is done. Indeed, we used to refer to this as "session id issues".

We should probably state that as a 'white-hat' SEO company, Cornish WebServices never use such techniques, but they are one of many hacker type attacks we regularly check for.

Can I stop 'dark side attacks from happening'?

Yes, some simple code will stop this. For most websites this code will not impact the SEO (indeed if such attacks are happening it will help it), but on some websites the code itself may have a detrimental affect on search engine rankings. Therefore best used when your logfiles show that it is happening.

Are dark side attacks new?

Probably not. But they have had some recent publicity (including how to do them which is irresponsible), so are likely to increase. Cornish WebServices have recently therefore given greater importance to checking for this as part of our SEO service for larger clients.
