Hundreds back rejected GB hurdler

An internet campaign backing Trafford 400m hurdler Rick Yates, overlooked by the British Olympic squad, has gained more than 800 signatures.

At the weekend Grand Prix event at Crystal Palace, the hurdler ran a lifetime best to reach the A standard for Beijing.

He said he was not surprised to have been rejected as he does not train with the UK Athletics groups.

"I train with Andrew Steel and it's taken him a while to break through."

He added: "Our group has had that in the past from UK Athletics so it was nothing new to me. It was nothing I didn't expect but there is nothing I can do about it.

"My coach just told me to let my legs do the talking and I think I did that at Crystal Palace."

Yates' win in a personal best time of 49.06 seconds put him eighth on the British all-time list for the event.
