Upgrade for county rambling route

Up to £160,000 has been spent on improving facilities along a 140-mile rambling route in Shropshire.

For the past year, Jim Stabler has worked with local businesses, ramblers, landowners and councillors to make the Shropshire Way more accessible.

The trail, which starts in Shrewsbury and passes through numerous areas, has been extended by 40 miles following suggestions from local walkers.

The funding paid for new stiles, gates and better access to public transport.

The route, devised by the Ramblers Association in 1980, includes Roman roads, Drover's trails, Iron Age forts and Norman castles, Shropshire County Council said.

Mr Stabler, a member of the council's Countryside Access team, said walkers would find the route a lot easier to get to and navigate.

"We've added other bits to make the route circular and made it easier to use public transport and we've upgraded," he said.

"We've put new stiles in, gates and finger posts so not only is it easier to get around, it's easier to walk it and find your way there.

"Some are just fabulous and it's thanks to them we have found them and managed to include them."

Funding has been provided by Shropshire County Council, Ramblers Association, Heritage Lottery Fund, European Regional Development Fund.
